Once Again, It's On
November 2011
Matthew Bandy

On Friday 23rd December Nyumba Deep brings you our last Social Gathering of the year. We are pleased to bring you, the discerning Deep House connoisseur, Matthew Bandy, a producer who has been making all the right noises this year.
Born in Flint, Michigan, Matthew Bandy grew up surrounded by the sounds coming out of the nearby Motor City and the many 45′s from his parents record collection. These sounds were to become a determining factor in defining his musical approach today. Bandy’s communion with house music has now brought him to international recognition. Remaining true to his musicality, Bandy has interwoven passion and originality through his creative ambitions in djing, producing, promotions, and operating a record label.
In the early 90′s Bandy was introduced to Dance music through the Midwest rave scene, a melting pot of sounds encompassing Techno, Hip Hop, Disco and House. Then living in Kentucky, far from a major metropolitan area for music, Bandy travelled to parties around the country. He developed his musical tastes by pulling his influences from the sounds of Chicago, Detroit, and the East and West coasts. By the late 90′s, Bandy was hosting his own events and introducing new music to his local scene. Having presented DJs such as Halo, Kevin Yost, Johnny Fiasco, Terrance Parker, Traxx and Onionz, Bandy simultaneously hosted Kentucky’s first and only electronic music radio show – “Through The Vibe” on WRFL. The show continues to broadcast to this day.

In 2000 Bandy focused on writing and producing music to further his creative vision. In doing so he created the studio collaboration and live act, Deep House Souldiers. This was a successful and creative partnership with Joel Hopper, now producer for Nappy Roots. In 2003 Matthew formed Limestone Recordings and moved to Denver, CO to expand his musical horizon. Deep House Souldier’s went on to release, “This Is Why We Dance,” on Limestone Recordings which was licensed to Ben Watt’s “Buzzin’ Fly Vol. 1″ compilation. His label was also featured in Urb Magazine’s 2004 “Next 100”. Now he has released a wide range of music on labels such as Soulheaven, Seasons, Drop, and Nordic Trax as well worked with the likes of Chez Damier, Jay Tripwire, and DJ Dealer to name a few.

His scope as a producer and his love for live music has taken him beyond the House sound. Matthew, alongside bass player Casey Sidwell, was one of the creators and driving forces behind ‘Know’, a jazz/funk/soul band for whom he produced and performed with. Know was built from many talented musicians and featured the soulful vocals of Venus Cruz. For 2 years Know held a weekly residency which became highly regarded within the city’s underground live music scene. Their events were home to some of Denver’s finest rising musicians, poets and artists. Further to this Matthew was involved in hosting two of the city’s most respected underground parties, Community and Afroblu.

You can find his music on compilations worldwide licensed on Defected, Universal, Om, Astralwerks, Large Records and many more. Now living in London, Matthew is living proof that no matter where one resides, originality and dedication is more important than ones locale.

Matthew will be supported by the Nyumba Deep residents:
Leon Paul
DJ Tipz
Aluku Rebels & making his debut,
Jon Stewart
With Sheyi on percussion

Once Again, It's ON!!
September 2011
Osunlade

On Saturday 15th October 2011, AphroDisiax join forces with Nyumba Deep to bring you a special night of Deep rooted,Afro-infused Ancestral House Music. It gives us great pleasure to present to you, the discerning music connoisseur, Osunlade.

Osunlade is an artist who personifies art. His music as well as his being creates unified melodies manifested with balance, life and wisdom. Hailing from St. Louis Missouri, a place known for pioneering jazz, blues as well, innovative artists like Miles Davis. At age seven Osunlade discovered the piano and the vision of his life’s destiny was born. By the age twelve he found an interest in creating songs of his own. He later formed local bands, taught himself several instruments and studied further the development of his craft.

His professional journey began in 1988, at age seventeen during a visit to Hollywood. He quickly caught the ear of choreographer/performer Toni “Mickey” Basil. Offering him a role in the development of musical pieces for several projects including the children’s television series Sesame Street. With her encouragement he quickly moved to Los Angeles and began what would become a long history of music production. A few years later he would produce the very first album for the then independent Interscope Records. The artist was Gerardo, a long time friend and aspiring actor/dancer. “Rico Suave” one of the very first Latin pop songs and novelty catch phrases to date was born. Now with a multi-platinum album and four gold singles to his name, it wasn’t long before he was afforded many opportunities to master his craft.

Within the next ten years and over twenty albums credited, Osunlade felt the pressures and practices of the music business overshadowed his passion of music. He decided to no longer work under the influences of corporate ideals and demands. Choosing to find spiritual solace and honour his soul, he was led to Ifa, an ancestral based culture/religion based on nature, deriving from the Yoruba tribes of Africa and practiced by the slaves during the Diaspora to America.

In 1999, Osunlade would embark on what is now his dream come true. The founding of Yoruba Records. Recognized as one of the most important dance music labels worldwide, Yoruba Records is purely a source of music created to elevate the soul.

As the success of the label grew, so did the demand for Osunlade to expand. In 2001 he released his debut album on the respected Soul Jazz Records label. “Paradigm” quickly became one of the biggest house albums that year and dubbed him the messiah of ancestral house music. With the support of dj’s worldwide and his music now introduced to a wider spectrum of listeners, this veteran musician/composer/producer becoming the artist finally achieved balance within.

Now known for his legendary dj sets and remixes and fourteen albums including several mix cd’s, Osunlade has placed himself on solid ground., his passion is in Yoruba Records maintaining its reputation of its unparallel quality in music.

Once Again, It's ON!!
August 2011
Soulful Joao

In August 2010 I joined up with a few friends to start a promotion to put on a party to help promote their DJ talents. The direction we decided to take was Deep Afro House and the name we chose was Nyumba Deep. Nyumba being the Swahili word for HOUSE.
One year later and we have positioned ourselves as one of the major players in London's House Scene.
On August 20th we celebrate one year of Social Gatherings with a party of epic proportions.
Joining us for this momentous occasion making his London debut is a DJ who I've featured many times on this podcast, Soulful Joao for Portugal.

Being a House Music lover for 9 years and travelling from the north to south of the country to hear the best world djs, it was natural that João Paulo turned himself a dj. He Started in some private parties for friends, and a few time after he was resident in a bar called " 100 Stress", at the same time he played in some places like “Pikolé", “Aquárius", "Dose 3 Large", "Oficina do Cais" " A Tasca" , etc.

After one year as a resident in " 100 Stress " he moved to the biggest music bar in Portugal called "Tazz", where he still plays very often , at the same time he and Selmer (Sax Player) created a project called " Soul & Sax" , and they play all over the country in bars and clubs like "Kocada Bar" , "F Caffe", "Caribe Disco" , "Tazz" , "Ensaio Bar" , "100 Stress Bar", "Almareado Bar", "Design Cafe" , "Go Live Bar" , "Twins Klub", "Broadway Disco", "RS Club", just to name a few. In 2006 he played in Spain in a club called "Metropol". He is also part of the Urban Dj`S Society.

His style is eclectic but it is evident the great affinity he has with soulful, jazzy, deep, afro, american underground music. He is one of the residents of the Deepersoul.blogspot.com, and he has his one hour show all saturday`s (8pm U.K Time 3pm NY Time) and all thursday`s ( 10pm U.K Time 5pm NY Time) on Motion FM , called "Underground Music Nation".

The mix you are about to indulge yourself in is his promo mix for our very special party.
If you are in London on August 20th, the venue is the Basement of Plan B in Brixton. If you can't make it I will make a point of podcasting his set.
Enjoy this serious mix and remember, you can have this feature downloaded straight to your desktop via the iTunes link. You can also add me as a friend on Facebook or follow me on Twitter.

Until next month
